Fitz campaign gets jobs data completely wrong. Or are they just lying?

Some good news on Ohio jobs numbers came out today, and it didn’t take Ed Fitzgerald’s New York City spokesperson long to completely screw it up.

First, we’ll start with her quote.

“Ohio continues to trail the nation in unemployment and the past two years have actually been significantly worse than what was previously reported,” said Lauren Hitt, press secretary for the FitzGerald-Neuhardt campaign.

First, she wrong about unemployment. From January 2011 to January 2014, the national number of unemployed people decreased 24.53%. Over that same period, Ohio’s number of unemployed decreased 25.04%. That’s not trailing the nation, that’s slightly ahead.

But the real whopper is the statement that “the past two years have actually been significantly worse than what was previously reported.”

Because exactly the opposite is true. New revisions to the numbers have actually shown that Ohio jobs have increased more than previously reported. From reporter Marc Kovac,

COLUMBUS — Ohio added 65,000-plus more jobs to its work force since 2011 than initially reported, according to updated employment statistics released Friday by state and federal officials.

The total includes 51,000 jobs in 2013, 75,800 in ’12 and 81,800 in ’11, up from earlier projections of 25,600 in ’13, 40,300 in ’12 and 77,600 in ’11, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The new numbers are the result of an annual revision that takes place each February, with tax filings and other information taken into account to create a more accurate picture of actual work force trends over the past five years.

This data directly contradicts what the Fitzgerald campaign told reporters.

quitzSo are they just that bad at this? Or are they directly lying to the press and hoping no one notices?

In either case, that should make Ohioans want to run from Ed Fitzgerald.

These reports of more Ohioans finding jobs than was previously thought must be devastating to Ed Fitzgerald and his out of state campaign staff. They’re out there hoping for bad news so they can hang it all on Kasich. So when the news coming in is good for Ohio, they must cringe and try to frame it so it looks bad.

The facts are that in the four years before Governor Kasich took office, we lost 400,000 Ohio jobs. And now, we have gained 238,000 of them back. Ed, Lauren and the gang are going to have a hard time explaining why we should go back to the Strickland model.

Or maybe they’ll just lie to reporters about them…
