Kearney owes thousands in delinquent taxes, caps off Fitzgerald’s week of fail

People in glasses houses shouldn’t throw stones.

Too bad nobody at the Ohio Democratic Party seems to have learned that lesson. For months they have been obsessed with filling their Twitter feeds with jabs at Matt Borges for his past tax troubles.

Now they have a tax cheat on the top of their own 2014 ticket. From Henry Gomez of the Plain Dealer:

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A publishing company owned by Ed FitzGerald’s new running mate in the race for Ohio governor owes the IRS tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes dating back a decade.

Eric Kearney received notice of the federal payroll tax lien in 2010, records reviewed by Northeast Ohio Media Group show. The unpaid balance at the time: $73,559.60.

This entire week has been an amateurish fumble for the Fitzgerald campaign.

It began with an article by Henry Gomez about a subject we have covered before: Fitzgerald’s trouble with attracting support from black leaders within his own party (and county).

Gomez’s article prompted Fitzy to make his announcement that he was picking Kearney, an African-American, immediately, just hours later. He did this on a day when the press was already consumed with multiple issues at the statehouse, and it was painfully clear to everyone that he rushed out his announcement to blunt the facts revealed in the Gomez article. As Jake noted, the whole affair was so haphazardly pushed out, that it was embarrassing to watch.

Then they cancelled a previous event to put together a 2-day tour of Ohio with Kearney that drew embarrassingly small crowds reminiscent of his barely attended announcement rallies in April.

Now to finish off the week, news comes out that Fitzgerald’s choice to share the ticket is a tax delinquent. The icing on the cake of a perfect fail.
