Zawistowski’s PAC spends most of its contributions on Zawistowski’s business

Purity for profit?

The Washington Post reported today that most of the big nationwide tea party related PACs actually spend more money on themselves than they do on the candidates they say they support.

A Washington Post analysis found that some of the top national tea party groups engaged in this year’s midterm elections have put just a tiny fraction of their money directly into boosting the candidates they’ve endorsed.

Out of the $37.5 million spent so far by the PACs of six major tea party organizations, less than $7 million has been devoted to directly helping candidates, according to the analysis, which was based on campaign finance data provided by the Sunlight Foundation.

Three well-known groups — the Tea Party Patriots, the Tea Party Express and the Madison Project — have spent 5 percent or less of their money directly on election-related activity during this election cycle. Two other prominent tea party groups, the Senate Conservatives Fund and FreedomWorks, have devoted about 40 percent of their money to direct candidate support such as ads and yard signs.

I’m guessing that most of the regular folks making contributions to these guys didn’t realize that such a small part of it actually helps the candidate and that they could be funding six-figure salaries for the PAC’s management.

Here in Ohio, you may have seen Tom Zawistowski asking tea partiers to donate to his Ohio Citizens PAC.

According to filings with the Secretary of State, OCP has raised over $11,000 so far this year and spent about $7400. Where did they spend that money?

$7000 of the donations went to TRZ Business Services. A company founded and run by Tom Zawistowski.

Capture

None of this is illegal, of course. But it is a little unseemly that contributions to his PAC also benefit his own business.

I find it very ironic that Zawistowski accused us of being paid by the ORP/Kasich administration to write this blog full time (a completely false claim that he has yet to back up or retract), all while asking people to donate to a PAC that benefits his own business.

Of course, this is the same source that says that the Democrats have agreed to toss the gubernatorial election, so I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised.
