Congresswoman Kaptur may want to start packing her things…

The vast majority of Ohioans have never heard the name “Paul Magliocchetti”.

But one person who definitely knows him is Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur.

And starting today, hearing his name again probably made her start to sweat profusely.

A former lobbyist has decided to plead guilty and cooperate in a Justice Department probe of campaign donations to members of Congress who directed hundreds of millions of dollars to defense contractors without competitive bidding.

A person outside the government who is familiar with the criminal investigation said Thursday that the once-prominent lobbyist, Paul Magliocchetti, will enter a plea on Sept. 24 in federal court in Alexandria, VA.

Why is that a big deal for Marcy Kaptur?

From a press release just sent out by Kaptur’s opponent this year, Rich Iott:

Campaign finance reports on file in Washington show that Magliocchetti, his family members, employees of the PMA Group, and their clients, have funneled a total of $143,800 to Marcy Kaptur. Kaptur has sponsored or supported tens of millions of dollars in earmarks to PMA clients, including Imaging Systems Technology of Toledo, which has won or has pending more than $16 million in earmarks sponsored by Kaptur.

On July 4, 2010, the New York Times reported on Kaptur’s efforts to steer earmarks to IST, a PMA client which makes materials for bullet proof vests they hope to one day sell back to the government for use by the Pentagon. The Pentagon has so far declined to buy more than a few of the vests that they have used in evaluations.

If Magliocchetti sings to the feds, which it sure looks like he’s about to do, Kaptur could very well be brought up into a lobbying scandal that could rival Jack Abramoff.

Kaptur has already opened the door for Iott to make a very serious run at her seat, and the money he’s investing into local television proves his sincerity.

The congresswoman has set the ball up on the tee for Rich Iott. Now he just needs to swing for the fences.
