Make no mistake, Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur is a formidable incumbent this November.
But that isn’t stopping her from trying to lose.
Any challenger in a difficult race against an incumbent needs both a wave election and a niche issue against their opponent.
Rich Iott, the Republican challenging Kaptur, now has both.
What’s the niche?
In an election defined by a newfound respect for fiscal responsibility, Kaptur found a way to run opposite that and utilize a work around of an earmark ban in order to direct federal dollars to a company that has been major contributors to her campaign.
But Kaptur can take refuge in knowing the scandal isn’t getting much publicity.
Unless, of course, you count the New York Times, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Toledo Blade and local television.
In other words, if you were in or anywhere near Marcy Kaptur’s district the past several days, you heard about Marcy Kaptur abusing the system for her own political gain.
And Iott is taking advantage of Kaptur’s major screw-up.
Will this win Iott the election? Who knows? But it sure made it a lot less challenging.
