AmTrust creating 800 new jobs in downtown Cleveland

Today the state Tax Credit Authority approved new incentives to 30 companies.  That’s a record, folks, and it represents a major tool that the Kasich administration is using to make Ohio a more attractive place to do business in.

“It’s a big day for Ohio, and it just shows that we continue to move in the right direction,” said Gov. John Kasich on Monday. “And if you look at these projects, it shows that they are pretty well distributed around the state.”

One of the biggest announcements is great news for downtown Cleveland. The insurance firm, AmTrust Financial Services plans to create 800 new, high-paying jobs in the city. The average salary of these new positions will be $50,000.

AmTrust will fill much of the 23-story building at 800 Superior Ave., part of a neighborhood that downtown boosters are trying to recast as a residential and business district called NineTwelve.

“We’re eager to build upon our existing investments in Northeast Ohio and excited to be part of the urban renaissance in downtown Cleveland, which is in the midst of a sweeping and exciting transformation,” Barry Zyskind, AmTrust’s chief executive officer, said in a written statement.

While Democrats want to focus on the one piece of bad news regarding the loss of Chiquita, they strangely seem quiet whenever we get announcements like this. And these type of good news jobs announcement seem to be rolling in faster and faster lately. In the last 2-3 weeks, we’ve had several winners and one loser. No one said we could win them all, but we seem to be taking 8 steps forward for every step back. That sounds like progress for Ohio.
